Writing Like Rafting

I’m working on my second Mac Crow novel now, tentatively titled Death In The High Lonesome. Sometimes, it feels like rafting a long and wild river. I’m good at writing exciting action sequences, but you can’t have a book that’s nothing but action sequences. That’s only for Michael Bay movies.

In writing this book, one of the more difficult things to write about is that my main character is a tracker. Trying to make looking for signs and footprints both easy to understand for laypersons, and also make the subject interesting, proves more challenging than I ever thought it would be.

The action and drama sequences are like being in a whitewater chute. You’re being sucked in, pulled through and everything flows fast. I can write a thousand words in one of these sections before I even look up to realize how much I’ve done. It always amazes me. Half the time I go back, re-read and say to myself “Wow! Did I write that? That’s cool!”

The in-between scenes are quite different. Imagine you’re out of the whitewater, and have been pulled into a big open eddy that keeps swirling you away from the main current. It requires a ton of paddling to get back in the main flow again. I’ll sit, write a paragraph, then have to get up and pace, often having character exchanges going on in my head (with actual hand gesturing, of course). Then back to the keyboard for another paragraph.

This goes on until I hit the main current again. Then, it’s off for another exciting run down the action chute. Eventually, I go back and re-read it all, and of course it’s the quiet scenes that need the most work and re-writing.

But, if I may confess something, there’s still a little kid part of me that reads the whole thing and still says; “Wow! Did I write that? That’s cool!” #writing

I’ve got big news! My first novel, The Sage Wind Blows Cold, is finally published!

After 3 years, it is finally available in print and as an ebook on Amazon.com and Smashwords.com, and it will be available on Ibooks and Kobo (and a variety of other places within the week). You will also be able to order the book from your local bookstore by using the ISBN number (ISBN: 978-0990995227).

Many of you have written through the years telling the author how much you like the Wandering ones, and chances are good if you like the comic, you will like this book. If you’ve ever felt like helping to support my chronicler, now is the time.

A little bit of housecleaning before we start the next story...

Next week, we’ll have a Miss Emily story, then I believe we will be headed for a long arc, possibly the final arc of this comic. Next April 8th will be the 15th anniversary of Wandering Ones. That might be a good place to end. I began the strip back when we were hearing all sorts of pies in the sky about how we’d be able to make a living doing webcomics on Keenspot. Of course, that never panned out for most of us but obviously, the satisfaction of doing this comic has counted for a lot.

One of my relatives once asked “how can you be so talented and not making any money at it?”

Perhaps that’s my true talent...

So, I am of course going to try the whole thing again in a different venue. I am currently in the process of creating two novels. One is, in a way a wandering Ones Novel, only it features Ravenwing’s sister, Ghost Wind. The story occurs just after the young scout’s banishment. Will any of the characters that we’ve seen in the comic show up? We’ll see... (one already has, you just might not remember him)

The other features MacKenzie “Mac” Crow. This is a contemporary thriller about an earlier 20’s young man, a tracker who is drafted into his uncle’s bounty hunting business. While tracking a lost young girl, he runs afoul of a psycho in the woods, and later on, the psycho’s family. This story is currently being beta read by one of my generous readers.

I also plan to release a new Wandering Ones collection through createspace and Amazon soon. Maybe these stories will outlive me.

If you’d like to know what’s happening on a more regular basis, like the Wandering Ones Facebook page, (and if you already have, go there and like a few things, my posts will get to you more often) Click the small “F” above this panel in the black.

I also occasionally tweet under the monicker @wanderclint But not to obnoxiousness. Click the small bird above the panel in the black.

I have a new book out!! :D

The new book Wolves in Street Clothing is on Amazon!

'Wolves in Street Clothing: How Animal Behavior Teaches Survival in the Asphalt Jungle will give you a new light in which to see human predatory behavior. As we move farther and farther from our roots insulating ourselves in technology and air conditioned homes we get disconnected from the inherent and innate aspects of understanding the precursors to violent behavior.

Violence is not always emotionally bound, often and in the animal kingdom is simply a tool to access a needed resource –or to protect an essential resource. Distance, encroachment, and signals are keys to avoiding a predator. Why would a cougar attack a man after a bike ride? Why would a bear attack a man in a hot tub? Why would a thug rob one person and not another? The predatory animal mind holds many of the keys to the answer to these questions.

Learn drills for skills that will help you tune your focus and move through life safer and more aware of your surroundings as sections of Wolves in Street Clothing bring old world survival skills into the modern jungle.'

March 28, 2014

Between my major project at work, a death in our family and preparing to go to ECC, I have sort of fallen off the train of getting updates done on time. Hopefully, Monday March 31, I will get on a regular schedule again.

Oh, and if you're wondering how the Amazon contest went, I didn't make it past the pitch stage, (along with 8,000 other writers) so no one actually ever read my submission. :/

March 02, 2014

I know some of you are wondering why I'm missing so many updates, and I do have regrets about that, but this previous weekend..

I just finished my first fiction novel :Death in the Moss'.

I started it when I was laid off in 2011 from the Wenatchee World Newspaper (I now work for their rival).

This weekend, we uploaded the pitch, a 5,000 word excerpt and the rough manuscript to the Amazon Breakthrough Novel contest. Up until a certain point, I am able to upload new versions of the MS and I've been editing furiously each weeknight after work this week. The first prizes are a $15K advance and a publishing deal. The GRAND prize is a $50k advance and a publishing deal. Wow!

And you know what? I have just enough hubris to think 'I might have a shot!'

I've been sharpening my storytelling with Wandering Ones for almost 14 years now but I realize first time writers always think their baby is the best thing since sliced bread.

The one thing that convinces me that I might be better than average is this. Suzie thinks my book is great too. Believe me, if it sucked, she would let me know, even if she was trying to be subtle about it.

So, I hope I can be forgiven for letting the webcomic slide a little. Like Obi Wan said, 'You've (I've) taken your first step into a larger universe.'

I just hope its as good as I think.

End prideful diatribe.

October 27, 2013

Wow. A lot has happened since I last put anything in this blog. Part of that is that my old computer simply wouldn't work with the old G5 I was running. I now have a new (used) Mac which I paid about a thrid of retail for. It, as you might guess runs circles around the old machine. The biggest news would be that Suzie and I have moved into my parents former home. We are now in Leavenworth (WA) and in a much smaller house. We have a barn full of possessions in boxes and tubs (both my parents and ours) that simply won't be fitting in the house. In other words, it's time to downsize.Today, I am working on illustrations for the book Sensei Kris Wilder and I are collaborating on. 60 to do, 34 done. After that is finished and the book is on Amazon, I get my life back! Woo hoo!

Testing...

July 1, 2013

Thanks to all of you for the kind words you sent and the patience you showed during the difficult period of the last month and a half. For those of you who don't know, my dad passed on May 12. Things were rugged with mom for a while, but she seems to be adjusting.

Right now, Suzie and I are trying like fire to get our manuscripts finished in time for the Pacific Northwest Writers assn conference at the end of July. Neither of us finaled for the contest for that conference, but I did receive a 36 out of 50 from one judge, and a 44 out of 50 from the other. Perhaps my writing isn't complete crap...

We're starting a new story in continuing the story that started in April. I just needed some time to get my writin’ mojo back. Thanks for waiting.

February 4, 2013

Well, I hope everyone is doing OK in this year of 2013. I, for one am glad to have 2012 over.

Since it is a new years, I did want to say one thing. Thank you.

Let me say for the record, that YOU have all been the greatest blessing of creating something like Wandering Ones. The fact that so many people were willing to not only sit down and read what has flowed from my head and hand and often write to tell me so is rather humbling. Had I not known that so many of you were out there, awaiting the next adventure of Ravenwing and her crew, I doubt I would have made it to the two year mark. We are just about a month and a half from the 13 year mark!

Chris Crosby of Keenspot tried to tell me in 2006 that Wandering Ones was going to take me nowhere and that I should come up with something different. Monetarily, he was correct, however my payment in satisfaction was what kept me going for another 7 years. I don't know how that will affect my future, but my past is one of gratitude.

So, what's on the horizon? I'm currently about half way through a 60,000+ word thriller novel, starring MacKenzie Crow, a young bounty hunter and tracker who gets in over his head on a search and rescue mission with the King County Sheriff's Dept. He finds he's not the only one in the woods tracking. Somewhere out there with him is a bow-using killer. I'm hoping to have it ready by the PNWA writers conference this summer.

I'm also hoping that later this year I can get Starting From Scratch updating again, and also I'm planning on finishing my Mountain World comic saga and posting them on the web (in color!). I'd also like to write a non-fiction book about wandering.

I will also have an article in an upcoming Backwoodsman Magazine, showcasing the neo-tribal knives Stormcrow (James Helm) made for me. (already accepted!)

As you can see, there's no shortage of ideas, just a shortage of time, money (and energy). If it all goes south, and my creative ventures never amount to anything, well... then I'll have more time to work on my own “Wandering Scout” skills.

October 5, 2012
Listening to one of Suzie's writers workshops on Itunes, the orator spoke of Pantser and Planners. Pantser's are those writers who literally fly by the seat of their pants, with little pre-planning and just write like crazy and eventually have a story. It may need a lot of editing, but It's a complete story sprung from their brow.Planners on the other hand may not need as much editing because ...they have the story outlined and set up before they ever get going on a draft. Both ways work, but one edits before and one edits after creation.I am obviously a pantser. I had a nice safe direction all planned for this Wandering Ones story (ok, a vague outline in my head) and as I was drawing Friday's page, my hands took the story in quite another direction. That was NOT planned. I think I am often as much in the dark about the story as any other reader. Almost.

September 26, 2012

It's been a long time between updates,... Mom is home, she and dad have more care than they had before (and that chafes them, but they refused assisted living which their insurance would pay for. .. as opposed to home care which it does not) I wind up playing parent more and more which puts me in the way of more grumbling and growling. I can safely say this has been one of the most stressful years so far. However, we seem to have hit a point of momentary calm and I am breathing deep and recentering my wa.

In other news I am working on two books at the same time; the novel I mentioned last year and a book on awareness of urban predators. I will put out more info as these things get closer to completion. Someday, my creative endeavors will allow me to drop the 9-5 and do what I do best. Tell stories!

We have been inundated by smoke from Grass/forest fires for the last two weeks. It's been like that movie 'The Mist' only the mist burns your lungs and eyes. The bonus is that giant spiders have not (as yet) jumped out of the haze and shot acid webs at me, so there's that to be thankful for. :p

My 84 year old mom is in the hospital. She made it through surgery just fine, but now, we really need to face that she and my dad really are too infirm to live at home any more. Stress is running high.

Oh, and I could use a little love too with the Scout Trail on Kindle. Honestly, this site doesn't pay for itself...

Update

may 14, 2012

Wow. Lotta book self promo stuff....

Finally got off my butt and made a Wandering Ones Facebook page.

My Scout Trail comic is now on Kindle! While it is possible to send a pdf to your Kindle (or Kindle app) I think this might be easier for most people on a tablet. (After no small amount of work trying to get into the correct format) I wish I could've gotten rid of the white surrounding borders..

Now I'm working on two books at once (and the webcomic). My tracker style thriller... and a martial arts awareness book with my pal Kris Wilder (author of several books on the martial arts - see Amazon). He's already got a publisher, but now, comes the hard part, writing a decent book! I will post a link to part of the thriller when I have a bit more done. it will probably be a novella followed by full length novels.

My mentor Jon Young also has a book out, on the Scout Skill of BIRD LANGUANGE and how to use it for your own awareness! Anyone can learn this skill with a little effort!

Lastly, Suzie now has 2 books (ebooks at this time) on Amazon (through bookstrand). I get to do the cover for the last one! (Photo collage) Her 2nd book 'The Serenade', features an imaginary prince of Spain who is able to heal his inner wounds with the music of an amazing opera Diva. I believe some romance is also involved. :p

Her third book will be out May 22.

Thanks everyone!

Suzie's first book is now on Amazon! She and I were going to go to the Emerald City Comicon last weekend until we saw the number of people waiting in line just to get tickets. We decided Pike Street Market sounded a lot more fun! Also, the book version of Wandering Ones: Scout Trail is over a buck off on Amazon at the moment. If you buy (or have bought it, I could use a few reviews.... (just sayin')

Update

Suzie's first book is coming out in March! She has a 3 book deal with Bookstrand and she's very excited. her first book out will be The Paradox, The Soldier and the Mystic with a release date of March 6, 2012 under the pen name Suzette Hollingsworth.

Hmmm. Seems like when I have something on my mind I'm not near a computer, and when I'm near a computer my mind goes blank. The first of Suzie's books should be coming out in February, and she is working on edits for the second. Things are going pretty good at the moment.

Update

Suzie and I were in Bellevue, wa for Suzie's Romance Writers of America convention. She now has 2 offers from One publisher and strong interest from another big publisher on her novella! No stopping' dat girl now! I got to go out to my old sitting spot on the Snoqualmie River and just be for a few hours. I didn't realize just how precious that was, but the last few months have enlightened me.

I keep wanting to come up with a sunny cheery report for you all, but aging parents rarely give you that opportunity. So, I've decided to talk about something of no consequence, my Ipad. I got an Ipad 1 back in March on Ebay, for a trip Suzie and I were taking and used it so much, that Suzie dubbed it 'the girlfriend'. Since then, it has pretty much been my daily companion at work. I take it for lunch and if not checking my email at a wifi enabled restaurant then I'm using it to re-read all my Barbara Hambly books on Kindle and of course listening to podcasts in my car on the 45 minute commute to and from Leavenworth. My Ipad helps me keep it together. And now, Amazon is coming out with their Kindle Fire. I wonder if getting one for my mom loaded with her favorite authors would help her keep it together mentally. Probably a forlorn hope. Her laptop is used soley for Solitaire and her new cell phone we bought is a great little watch gadget. Henh. Keep striving, folks.

August 27, 2011
What a week! I'm sorry for missing three updates in a row, but my new job is very intense at this, the learning stage. Add to that that my 86 year old dad took a fall on Monday, August 22 and Suzie wound up taking time away from work to tend to him and my mom... well, it's now Saturday, and she and I are about done in. But the job will get easier as I get more experience (and talk about job security, I'm the only full time designer there!) My dad has gone into temporary assisted living to get the care he needs to get back on his feet. Suzie and I tried to take care of him and my mom and quickly learned that professional caregivers EARN every bit of money they make!

August 17, 2011
I am now re-employed! In Leavenworth! My life seems to be paralleling this comic strip, but fortunately, no lederhosen! (yet) Off to the Earthwalk Northwest primitive skills gathering this weekend then off to work on Monday.

Update

I think I mentioned it before, but I'm on TWITTER now! Wanderclint.

As you saw above, I got the axe. On June 10, 2011, my association with the newspaper industry was ended (permanently) when I was laid off at the Wenatchee World. No need to fret. I had had my desk packed up for over a month, when a fellow employee, one who did a lot of the heavy lifting (as did I) was let go. I figured if she could be turned loose anyone could. I am amazed that the paper has held on as long as it has. Several others went out the door with me.

So now I'm unemployed, and it may turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to me. By the time I left, I was making so little money, that the main draw of staying there was the limited health insurance (of which I paid half). Now, I have time to work on ALL the projects I've been champing at the bit to finish, including the Scout Trail story which is eleven pages of coloring and and a front cover from completion. I have time to build a site for my new comic, Starting from Scratch and and the new half page format for Wandering Ones will allow me to update three time a week. Oh, and I started a novel. A tracker based murder mystery. I'm only a thousand words in, but it's flowing really well. I also might eventually have time to start updating Shin Kage again! Oh, and there's updating the resumé...

Did I mention I'm excited?

The World has generously given me severance through August, and I have started a schedule that pretty much equals a 7 hour work day every day (with an hour for excercise).

So, if you're worried about me, don't be. I will not only survive, I intend to THRIVE! :D

NEXT WEEK, we will be starting the Scout Trail preview. At the end that, I will have the entire PDF for sale (It looks great on a tablet!), if you want to help and get a great story in return, that will be the time.

Looking Forward. - Clint Hollingsworth

Update

February 22, 2011

Thank you very much to those of you who were kind enough to send best wishes after my mom's health. She is out of the hospital, and the swelling of the cellulitus on her arm has gone down. She's taking antibiotics to get rid of the infection and it seems to be working. She's in her early 80's, and when they are at that geriatric age, any trip to the hospital is a risk and a scare.

Here's the ironic thing. Just as she was going home, I was writhing in the worst pain I've ever had. Susie finally called 911 and I got my first ride in an ambulance! It was not a pleasant ride. Finally, in the emergency room, they gave me the good drugs and life became mellowww... Got scanned every which way and they found nothing. I had been VERY feverish the day before, and they diagnosed it as a stomach virus. I sure hope they're right.

I spent the night in the hospital and the only rough part was waking up, semi hypothermic at 2a.m. I called the nurse, and asked her to check the temp in my room. Oops! 54 degrees! Great temp for a sick person. On the whole though, the folks at the hospital were great, and it is kinda nice to waited on hand and foot for a night. The next day there was no trace of the pain, I was just really tired.

I did miss 4 days of work an a VERY busy week, letting down the other designers which i feel a bit guilty about. But really, what could I do?

HEY! By the way, I'm on TWITTER now! Wanderclint. If I get more followers, I'm likely to tweet more... (hint, hint)

Update

The end of the Beta storyline.... Wow. That was the longest story I have EVER done, and I'm not sure it was such a good idea. I definitely going to avoid letting things stretch out like that for a while. Coming up is Daniela's 8 page story featuring Wolfie and Blue Shadow and then I may do a story on the various apprentices and their training.... but I also want to do a story about the Winchester Wasteway, which my friend Howard and I shared a harrowing canoe trip on (we waited too late in the year, when all irrigation water was added into the flow). Right now, I'm glad to have a few weeks off (Thanks Dani) just to regroup, plan and work on the Scout Trial comic. (which I may only e-publish as a pdf due to the lack of sales on my other books - I've only made about a quarter of my expenses back on) Wandering Ones book 3.

I'm trying to do a little blogging once a week, renovating my old Blah Blah Doo Wah site. That blank page is pretty intimidating sometimes, so don't be surprised if there is a lot of art. There's also a new message board, though since I have less time to visit it at work, I have not been as active as I should be. (Oh, who am I kidding! Halo Reach is more than partly to blame!)

Things around casa Wandering Ones are holding steady at the moment. The craziness at work has evolved into other craziness. We have less people now doing more work but with this economy, business is still feast or famine. I'm just glad to still have a newspaper to work for.

We recently lost my buddy, Mr. Scruffy. Some time in the 90's, I was out looking for my cat Squeaky, when I thought I saw him under the car. I called to him and this Scrawny tabby zipped out, sat in my lap and meowed in a very needy manner. He was almost nothing but skin and bones and lived up to what would be become his name. A bowl of cat food, and he was mine for many a year afterward. He always seemed to want to be near me, I think he was grateful. I sure miss him. But strangely, not two weeks later, my neighbor came over in tears, because a young cat had hidden under her porch and meowed all night every night. Susie was over in a flash and voila, a new cat, named Capt Jack. I tell him nightly, that 'I knew Mr. Scruffy, and you sir are no Mr. Scruffy!' Still, the brat's growing on me.

I want to take a moment to thank those who have donated.....Rodney, Gustaf, Alexander, and the ever faithful Stormwind. I really appreciate the help!

We're switched over! Let me know what you think of the new site!

Update

Getting ready to change off the Keenspot servers! Spencer is a WEB GOD!

Update

July 2, 2010

Things are a bit higgledy piggeldy here at the Wandering Ones Clubhouse. Spencer and I... (well, mostly him...) have been redesigning the site to not only look cleaner, but to use something besides Keenspot's Autokeen automation system. It's been a lengthy process, but we expect to be off Keenspot's servers within a week or so. There may be a few days of confusion, as the DNS updates where it's pointing, but there should be no long-term problems. I will try to make it clear if you are viewing the old site after the switch. I will NOT miss that Keenspot header bar (all two of them). We will also have a new forum, so if you want to see or copy anything from the old forum, I wouldn't wait too long...

I have a new book out! The Wandering Ones books were formerly published by Keenspot, but I didn't have a very good grasp on sales numbers, what royalties were owed and so on. I decided to do the third book through CreateSpace, a division of Amazon and take control of my own creative stuff. It's the first entire book in comic BOOK format (as opposed to strip format) and I have to admit, it's one of my favorite stories. I got a lesson in how my stories meander, after realizing that it took me 200 pages to tell the tale. The book is available through Amazon (or CreateSpace) I make a LOT more through CreateSpace, but if you just happen to have a cart at Amazon and feel like throwing book 3 in, I still do alright.

In other news, I have 20 pages of the Wolfrun's Scout Trial story drawn, and 12 more to go. Then I have to color the whole thing. I think this one will appear in printed book form and downloadable PDF. I will put a 10 page preview up when I get it done. All you folks who've donated will receive a PDF copy.

I will be taking an 8 page break at the end of this story, (sometime in August I think) and my APA 5 buddy Daniela Moreschachi will be drawing a short tale of Wolfie and Blue Shadow in a ghost town.

There's a VERY good possibility that I will be teaming up on a supernatural thriller webcomic with none other than Maritza Campos! More on this as the project progresses.

I hope you're are all doing well. Be totally excellent to each other!

Ten Years

Well, last Thursday was ten years here at Keenspot, doing Wandering Ones. It really is rather amazing to me that this has gone on so long! I remember once, thinking if this doesn't start being successful, I'm done at 5 years. Well, by some degrees, I'm mildly successful, but by others, I'm doing quite well. Last year, a combo of donations and advertising made up almost 1/10th of my income. (Ok, I admit my income is not too impressive, but still...) So, I want to thank all of you who read the comic regularly. It's kind of humbling, when I add up all the kind emails I've received over the years that I've been able to entertain so many for so long.

And a few other shout outs... I'd really like to thank all the folks that have donated over the years (especially Stormwind13). Also I'd like to thank a fellow (who prefers anomynity) who sent a gift of a Prince Valiant book, the reproduction value of which was stunning. Also to Storm Crow, who sent me the awesome hand forged tomahawk head. (See some of his knife work in the forum). And thanks to all of you who volunteered to help me with moving the website. I had originally wanted to do it all myself, Mr. Independent. Then I realized how much I had been relying on Keenspot's automation, and how little I really knew about websites. Fortunately, Spencer M. made me an offer I couldn't refuse and is going to help me get your favorite adventure comic moved and working someplace besides Keenspot. (Thanks man!)

All of you who have contributed, will be getting a link to a special PDF soon (and I hope a 50MB download won't freeze your computer). Watch for an email from me (but don't expect it tomorrow, I'm taking care of business as fast as i can).

New from the Home Front

If you can't change your situation, change your attitude!

Things at work are only getting crazier at work, as people leave and aren't replaced, so I'm simply trying to pay attention to whatever God/The Great Spirit/The universe/The Force/The Dao brings to me each day. (I'm almost surprised how much it enriches your life to stop stressing all the time.) I still recognize the problems, but now I look for the lessons and opportunities in each occurence. Kinda goofy? Maybe, but I ask you, what good has stressing ever done for you?

I hope the next time I write, it will be from a new hosting service with a whole new web design. Take good care of yourself folks, don't let life pass by without paying attention. It's finite.-Clint

Start of a new era

January 5, 2010

First of all, let me wish all my readers an excellent 2010. I sincerely hope that this is not only a stellar upcoming year for all of you, but that it heralds a decade of increasing prosperity.

I've been sitting here, watching the morning change from dense fog to large fluffy snowflakes and I've been contemplating the end of an era. If your read my 12-19 chatter, you know that Keenspot, as we know it is coming to an end. If you don't, a lot of the story, including Keen's memo to the cartoonists can be found here. Some readers have offered to help with web help and possible hosting, which I appreciate greatly. I will probably take up offers of help, but having had my hand held by Keen for (almost) 10 years, it's time I wised up and learned how to do things for myself.

So what will the new Wandering Ones site be like (assuming I can get it rehosted and working)? Not a lot different. I need to make a version without any Keenspot codes, but I don't have the ability to get complicated. The main thing is to get the comic displayed and the ad codes working so I don't get booted from my ad company. So, here is my to-do list:

  • Find a good web host for my three domain names
  • Gain ownership of my three domain names from Keenspot. (I know, I know, but when I started this in 2000, I didn't know ANYTHING. So Keenspot... held my hand through the process)
  • Find a new automation script to generate the pages for reading
  • Move the sites, probably starting with Shin Kage.

Doesn't sound like much does it? Well, it's enough of a pain to take up time I'd rather be using to draw the comic. Any suggestions, don't hesitate to email.

By the way, I got a new used Mac over the holidays (with a credit card, sadly) and it's great, but the operating system is old OSX 10.3 so If you're contacting me on Facebook, I can't answer until I get an updated OS so that I can update my ancient version of Safari.
